The Tyrewise team have invited the Ministry for Environment (MfE) to investigate options to address issues of tyre stewardship fee misalignment to some tariff codes.
This is in response to industry concerns about how some loose tyre categories were mapped to tariff codes during scheme design. This has led to some anomalies in the value of the tyre stewardship fee for some similar tyre sizes that are imported under different tariff codes.
Tyrewise has formed a technical advisory group (TAG) made up of industry members to inform recommendations to the Ministry.
The group’s role is to:
- share specialist knowledge, such as members’ technical knowledge on the tyre market, the practicalities and impacts of different policy options; and
- provide guidance and feedback on draft policy content; and
- be a sounding board for MfE to test their thinking.
Group members will meet online over a series of four two-hour meetings between August and October.
They will identify the problem(s) and options and complete an assessment of the options. At the final meeting a summary report will be approved outlining the group’s findings and recommendations.
This will be reviewed by the Auto Stewardship New Zealand (ASNZ) Board and subsequently submitted to MfE. ASNZ is the not-for-profit organisation that oversees Tyrewise.
It is important that the group represents importers of a range of tyre types.
